Mountain bike and cycling tours

Bikebroschuere

The alpine world Karwendel is an ideal starting point for mountain biking and cycling tours for “young and old”. More comfortable tours can be found in the valley between flower meadows, bathing lakes and the wide river landscapes of the Isar with its pebbles and gravel river banks. Mountain biking tours to the Karwendel and Wetterstein, or a mountain chain round trip are conditionally demanding and impress with an alpine panorama.

A 65 km loop with approx. 500 m elevation gain. From your campsite to Wallgau and on toward Einsiedel am Walchensee. Once you pass the Obernach water research centre, veer onto the wooden bridge to your left and onto the logging road. Follow the signs to Eschenlainetal; after about 20 minutes, you’ll crest the ridge. Descend from here through a little stream, past a small lake and over a waterfall until you begin to exit downward out the valley alongside the brook. Once in Eschenlohe below, keep left of the Loisach to ride over its seven sources to Farchant and then on to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From Partenkirchen, continue on the old road toward Schlattan and then stay on the cycling path to Kaltenbrunn, Gerold and Klais until you’re back at Tennsee. You also have the option of returning to Klais from Eschenlohe or Garmisch-Partenkirchen by rail.karte_eschenlainetal

Isar Valley cycling loops

Choose from amongst numerous mountain bike cycling loops in close proximity.

Choose from amongst numerous mountain bike cycling loops in close proximity.

You have a number of cycling options around Barmsee lake, to Wallgau or Mittenwald, along the Isar river and even a fully-maintained cycling path to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Because our high valley is so wide, our cycling paths were laid out relatively flat. If you ride out to Mittenwald or Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can easily return to Klais and our campground by railway.

Special cycling maps for all age groups are available at the reception.
There’s a lot of ground to cover here!

Alpine meadows for cyclists

For those looking for a little extra exertion and “altitude adjustment,” there are any number of logging roads up into the meadows.

Ferein-Alm

1387 m, approx. 400 m elevation gain, cycling path to Mittenwald, cross the road at Isarhorn and follow Seinsbach along the logging road, veer upward to the right before the shooting range and follow the steep climb of the road. The managed meadowland just 50 m further down over the ridge.

Fischbach-Alm

1600 m, approx. 600 m elevation gain, starting from the hiker’s car park in Krün, cross the bridge over the Isar and then veer left, following the logging road and the signs.

Wetterstein-Alm

1464 m, Schachen, 1866 m, to Elmau via Klais, then follow the logging road up to the huts after Gut Elmau.

Krüner Alm

1621 m, toward Wallgau via Barmsee lake (approx. 600 m elevation gain), at the halfway point, veer onto the route to Finzalm and Krüner Alm. Follow the signs toward Krüner Alm and leave your bicycle at the utility cableway. It’s just a ten-minute walk to the base of the Krüner Alm meadow with its spectacular view of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains.

Rundtour Esterbergalm, Pfeifferalm, Gschwandtnerbauer

Ride along Barmsee in the direction of Wallgau and follow the signs to Esterbergalm. This managed meadowland is beautifully situated in a high open valley between Wank and Hoher Fricken at 1294 metres. Continue on down toward Partenkirchen and onto a panoramic route with amazing views over the Wetterstein to Pfeifferalm at approximately 1000 metres. Soak up some sun on the southern slope before getting back on the return loop to Tennsee. Also recommendable is a quick detour to the Gschwandtnerbauer inn at 1020 m, among the most popular day trip destinations in the area with a breathtaking view from the Zugspitze to the Karwendel mountains.

Elmau – Hochstraße – loop

An approximate 35 km loop lasting about 2 to 3 hours. Elmau, Lautersee, Ferchensee, Mittenwald

Ca. 35 km, Höhenunterschied ca. 300 m, in ca. 2-3 Stunden.
